Our Ph.D. graduate students are supported mainly by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Office of Naval Research (ONR). Although candidates with an M.S. degree are preferred, candidates with a Batchelor's degree are also given serious consideration as it is possible to go directly from the B.S. to the Ph.D. degree. As is shown (with the red circles) in the map below, the location of our research extends from the tropics to the poles. Research topics include various exciting processes such as El Nino, the flow in the Sea of Japan, the Indonesian Sea, and the Red Sea; eddies in the South Atlantic; the communication between the Southern Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean; and the implications of oceanic processes to climate and global change. Research involves solutions of partial differential equations governing the movements in the ocean as well as the interpretation of measurements made by satellites and sea-going research vessels. We encourage students to choose processes according to their particular interests, use advanced computation techniques, achieve a thorough understanding of the chosen processes and develop their own style of addressing problems.

For my M.S. degree, I studied the mechanical energy budget of a semi-enclosed sea using a numerical model. Areas of oceanography that I find particularly interesting are numerical modelling, relations between model output and observations, polar regions, mesoscale oceanography, and tsunamis.
